How long does yogurt last?

Yogurt keeps 1 to 2 weeks in the fridge from the day you buy it, and 1 to 2 months in the freezer. Once a tub is open, keep it covered, use a clean spoon, and check it before each serving.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.

How to tell if yogurt has gone bad

  • Mold of any color on the surface or under the lid. Throw out the whole container: don't scoop the mold off.
  • A smell that is sharper, yeasty or rotten rather than the usual clean tang.
  • A lumpy or curdled texture that doesn't smooth out when stirred.
  • A bulging lid on a sealed pot, a sign that something is growing inside.

How to store yogurt

  • Keep yogurt on a shelf in the main part of the fridge, not in the door.
  • Use a clean spoon every time. A spoon that has been in your mouth adds bacteria that make an open tub spoil faster.
  • Put the lid back on tightly and return the tub to the fridge right after serving.
  • The clear liquid on top is whey. It's normal: stir it back in or pour it off.

Can you freeze yogurt?

Yes, for 1 to 2 months. The live cultures survive, but the texture turns grainy and watery when thawed, so frozen yogurt works best in smoothies, baking and sauces rather than eaten from the pot. Freeze single pots as they are, or spoon a tub into ice cube trays. Thaw it in the fridge and stir well.

Questions

Can you eat yogurt after the date on the pot?

Yogurt is acidic and often keeps a little past its date if the pot is sealed and has stayed cold. Open it and check: if there's no mold, it smells normal and the texture is smooth after stirring, it's usually fine. Throw it out at the first sign of mold.

How long does yogurt last once opened?

FoodKeeper gives yogurt 1 to 2 weeks from purchase, and an open tub doesn't extend that. With the lid on and a clean spoon each time, it keeps within that window; single pots are best eaten once opened.

How long can yogurt sit out?

No more than 2 hours at room temperature, or 1 hour above 32 °C (90 °F), like milk and other dairy products.
