Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if a kiwi has gone bad
- Very soft, mushy or leaking fruit.
- Mold on the skin, often at the ends, or wrinkled, shriveled skin.
- A fermented smell, or brown, translucent flesh.
How to store kiwis
- Ripen hard kiwis at room temperature, or in a paper bag with an apple or banana to speed things up.
- A kiwi is ripe when it gives slightly to gentle pressure, like a ripe peach.
- Move ripe kiwis to the fridge, away from other fruit that gives off ethylene.
- Hard, unripe kiwis keep longer in the fridge and ripen once you take them out; FoodKeeper's 3 to 6 days are for ripe fruit.
Can you freeze kiwis?
The USDA doesn't recommend freezing whole kiwis: they turn mushy. Peeled and sliced kiwi can be frozen in a single layer for smoothies and sorbets, where the soft texture doesn't matter.
