How long does salsa last?
An unopened jar of salsa keeps about 1 year in the pantry, and about 1 month in the fridge once opened. Fresh salsa from the chilled section keeps 4 to 7 days, and homemade fresh salsa 5 to 7 days in the fridge.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if salsa has gone bad
- Mold on the surface or under the lid: throw out the whole jar.
- A sour, fermented or alcoholic smell, or a fizzy taste.
- A bulging lid on an unopened jar, or a darker, mushy look.
How to store salsa
- Keep unopened jars in a cool, dark cupboard.
- Refrigerate salsa once opened, with the lid tight.
- Don't dip chips directly into the jar: pour some into a bowl, so saliva and crumbs don't go back in.
- Don't leave a bowl of salsa out for more than 2 hours.
Can you freeze salsa?
Homemade fresh salsa freezes for about 12 months, but the vegetables soften and release water, so use it thawed in cooking: in chili, sauces, eggs or soups. Drain off excess liquid after thawing.
