How long do pickles last?
An unopened jar of pickles keeps about 1 year in the pantry. Once opened, keep it in the fridge and finish it within 1 to 3 months. Refrigerated pickles sold in the chilled section must always stay cold.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if pickles have gone bad
- Mold on the surface of the brine or on the pickles.
- Soft, slimy or mushy pickles that used to be crunchy.
- A bulging lid, a foul smell or unexpected fizzing in the jar. Cloudy brine alone can be normal in fermented pickles.
How to store pickles
- Keep unopened jars in a cool, dark cupboard.
- Once opened, refrigerate the jar and keep the pickles covered by the brine.
- Use a clean fork or tongs, not your fingers, to take pickles out.
- Don't top up an old jar with new pickles.
Can you freeze pickles?
Not really: they turn soft and lose their crunch. Pickles already keep for months in the fridge.
Questions
Do pickles need to be refrigerated after opening?
Yes. The brine is acidic, but the fridge keeps opened pickles crunchy and safe for 1 to 3 months.
Can you eat pickles after the date?
An unopened jar in good condition is usually fine past its best-by date. Check for a bulging lid, mold or a bad smell.
Is cloudy pickle brine safe?
In fermented pickles, cloudiness can be normal. In vinegar pickles, cloudy brine together with softness, slime or a bad smell means they've spoiled.
