Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if oats have gone bad
- A rancid, musty or sour smell: oats contain oils that go off over time.
- Clumps, damp patches or mold, from moisture getting in.
- Insects, larvae or webbing in the package: throw it out and check nearby dry goods.
How to store oats
- Once opened, move oats to an airtight container in a cool, dry, dark cupboard.
- Keep them away from the stove and the dishwasher, where heat and steam speed up rancidity.
- Keep cooked oatmeal and overnight oats in a sealed container in the fridge and eat them within 3 to 4 days.
Can you freeze oats?
Yes. Dry oats keep longer in the freezer, which also kills any insect eggs. Cooked oatmeal freezes well in portions: reheat it with a splash of milk or water.
