Does liquor go bad?
Distilled spirits like vodka, whiskey, rum and gin keep indefinitely. Once opened, they slowly lose aroma over the years, but don't spoil. Cream liqueurs are different: unopened, they keep 6 to 8 months; once opened, follow the label.
| Food | Pantry |
|---|---|
| Spirits (vodka, whiskey, rum, gin) | Indefinitely |
| Cream liqueurs, unopened | 6–8 months |
Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if liquor has gone bad
- Spirits: a much weaker smell or flat taste after years in a half-empty bottle. Not unsafe, just faded.
- Cream liqueurs: curdling, lumps, a sour smell or a change of color mean it's gone off.
- Anything floating or growing in a liqueur with fruit or sugar.
How to store liquor
- Keep bottles upright, tightly closed, in a cool, dark place.
- A half-empty bottle loses aroma faster because of the air inside; finish it sooner, or pour it into a smaller bottle.
- Keep opened cream liqueurs in the fridge if the label says so.
Can you freeze liquor?
Spirits at 40% alcohol don't freeze solid in a home freezer, so vodka can live there for ice-cold shots. Cream liqueurs and lower-alcohol drinks can freeze and separate.
Questions
Does unopened whiskey go bad?
No. Sealed spirits keep indefinitely if stored upright away from heat and light.
How long does Irish cream last once opened?
Follow the label: manufacturers usually give a period after opening, often a few months, and recommend keeping it cool.
Do liqueurs go bad?
Sweet liqueurs keep a long time but can lose flavor and color; those with cream, eggs or fruit spoil sooner.
