How long does hummus last?
A sealed tub of pasteurized store-bought hummus can keep up to 3 months in the fridge (check its date), and about 7 days once opened. Homemade or fresh hummus without preservatives keeps about 7 days.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if hummus has gone bad
- A sour or fermented smell, or a fizzy, tangy taste.
- Mold: any fuzzy spots mean the whole tub goes, not just the top.
- A watery, separated layer that doesn't stir back in, or a slimy texture.
- A bulging lid on a sealed tub.
How to store hummus
- Keep hummus in the fridge, sealed, on a shelf rather than in the door.
- Use a clean spoon to serve it, and don't dip into the tub directly with vegetables or bread you've bitten.
- Don't leave it out for more than 2 hours, including at a party.
- Smooth the top and add a thin layer of olive oil to slow drying out.
Can you freeze hummus?
The USDA doesn't recommend freezing it. Thawed hummus turns grainy and watery; stirring in a little olive oil helps, but it won't be as smooth. If you do freeze homemade hummus, use it within a few months and thaw it in the fridge.
