Do crackers go bad?

An unopened box of crackers keeps about 8 months in the pantry. Once opened, crackers keep their crunch for about 1 month in the pantry, or 3 to 4 months in the fridge or freezer.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.

How to tell if crackers have gone bad

  • Soft, chewy or stale crackers: not unsafe, just past their best.
  • A rancid smell or bitter taste, from the oils going off.
  • Mold or insects in the box.

How to store crackers

  • Roll down the inner bag tightly and clip it, or move crackers to an airtight container.
  • Keep them in a cool, dry cupboard, away from the stove.
  • Whole-grain crackers and those with seeds or cheese go rancid sooner: keep them cool.

Can you freeze crackers?

Yes, for 3 to 4 months, in an airtight bag or container. Let them come to room temperature before opening so they don't pick up moisture.

Questions

How do you make stale crackers crisp again?

Spread them on a baking sheet and bake them at about 150 °C (300 °F) for 5 minutes, then let them cool.

Can you eat crackers after the best-by date?

Usually yes, if they don't smell rancid or show mold or insects. They may be less crisp.

Why do crackers taste bitter?

A bitter or paint-like taste means the oils have gone rancid. Throw them out.
