How long does cooked pasta last?
Cooked pasta keeps 3 to 5 days in the fridge and 1 to 2 months in the freezer. Homemade fresh pasta keeps only 1 to 2 days in the fridge, while dry pasta keeps about 2 years in the pantry.

Fridge at 4 °C (40 °F) or colder, freezer at −18 °C (0 °F). Freezer times are for best quality: food kept frozen stays safe, but slowly loses taste and texture. These times are USDA guidance, not a guarantee. When in doubt, throw it out.
How to tell if pasta has gone bad
- Mold: fuzzy spots, often white, green or black. Throw out the whole container.
- A slimy texture or a sour smell on cooked pasta.
- Discolored spots, or cooked pasta that has been in the fridge for more than 5 days.
- Dry pasta that smells musty, shows insects or is damp has had its day; dry pasta that has simply passed its date is usually fine.
How to store pasta
- Let cooked pasta cool briefly, toss it with a little oil so it doesn't clump, and refrigerate it within 2 hours in a sealed container.
- If you can, store pasta and sauce separately: the pasta stays firmer.
- Keep dry pasta in a sealed container or its closed box in a cool, dry cupboard.
- Store-bought refrigerated fresh pasta has its own date: follow the package.
Can you freeze pasta?
Yes. Cooked pasta keeps 1 to 2 months in the freezer, best if it was cooked slightly al dente. Freeze it in portions, ideally mixed with sauce, which protects its texture. Pasta bakes like lasagna freeze very well. Fresh pasta freezes for about 2 months: freeze it in nests on a tray, then bag it, and cook it straight from frozen.
Questions
How do you reheat cooked pasta?
Drop it into boiling water for 30 to 60 seconds, or reheat it with its sauce in a pan or the microwave with a splash of water, until steaming hot.
Does dry pasta expire?
Dry pasta keeps about 2 years unopened and about 1 year once opened. The date is about quality: older pasta can taste flat or cook unevenly, but kept dry it rarely spoils.
Can you eat cold pasta from the fridge?
Yes, if it was refrigerated within 2 hours of cooking and is within its 3 to 5 days, as in a pasta salad.
